Step-by-step instructions

  1. Stand and step your feet about a leg's length apart, turning your right foot to point straight out to the side and angling your left foot slightly inward.

  2. Reach both arms out to shoulder height, then on an exhale extend your torso far out over the right leg, hinging from the right hip rather than bending the waist.

  3. Lower your right hand to your shin or to a block placed beside your ankle, and reach your left arm straight up so the arms form one long line.

  4. Keep a micro-bend in the front knee and lengthen both sides of your waist evenly to keep the lower back and hips long and safe, drawing the low belly in for support.

  5. Turn your chest open toward the ceiling and only turn your head to gaze up at the top hand if your neck feels comfortable, otherwise look straight ahead or down.

  6. Hold for five to eight steady breaths, then press into both feet and inhale to rise back up, and repeat on the left side.
