Step-by-step instructions

  1. From standing, step your feet wide apart, turn your right foot out to point forward and your left foot in slightly, and align your right heel with your left arch.

  2. Bend your right knee deeply until it stacks directly over your right ankle, tracking your knee in line with your second toe so it never collapses inward and your knee stays protected.

  3. Rest your right forearm on your right thigh, or bring your right hand to the floor or a block just inside your right foot, and sweep your left arm up and over alongside your ear.

  4. Press firmly into your back foot and engage your core to keep your low back long, drawing your top hip and shoulder back to open your chest toward the ceiling.

  5. Lengthen from your back heel all the way through your reaching top fingertips, breathe steadily, and hold for 4 to 6 breaths, turning your gaze up only if it feels easy on your neck.

  6. To come out, press into your feet, inhale, and straighten your front leg to rise, then turn your feet and repeat on the left side.
