Step-by-step instructions

  1. From a standing position, step your feet wide, turn your right foot out to face the short edge of the mat, and point your left toes slightly forward.

  2. Bend your right knee toward a right angle, tracking the knee directly over the ankle and never letting it collapse inward, so the joint stays protected.

  3. Lower your right forearm onto your right thigh, or bring your right hand to the floor or a block just outside the foot.

  4. Reach your left arm up and over alongside your ear, turning your chest open toward the ceiling and creating one long line from your back heel through your fingertips.

  5. Keep your core engaged and your lower back long rather than crunched, and breathe steadily into the side body for five breaths.

  6. To exit, press firmly into both feet, inhale to rise back up to standing, and repeat on the other side.
