Step-by-step instructions

  1. From standing, step your right foot forward about a leg's length, turn your back left foot out slightly, and square both hips to face the front.

  2. Reach your arms straight overhead and lengthen your whole spine tall before you begin to fold.

  3. Hinge forward from the hips with a long, flat back, keeping a soft micro-bend in your front knee to protect it and avoid rounding your lower back.

  4. Extend your arms forward in line with your spine and let your torso fold over the front leg only as far as your hamstrings allow, breathing steadily.

  5. Rest your hands on a block on either side of the front foot if the floor feels far away, keeping both hips level to ease the hip and back.

  6. Hold for 5 breaths, then rise with a flat back on an inhale, step the feet together, and repeat on the other side.
