Step-by-step instructions

  1. From a standing forward bend or lunge, place your front-leg-side hand on a block about a foot in front of your standing toes for stability.

  2. Shift your weight forward onto the standing leg and float the back leg up to hip height, keeping it straight and strong.

  3. Keep a slight micro-bend in your standing knee and spread the toes of your standing foot to steady the ankle, which works hard for balance here.

  4. Stack your top hip over the bottom hip and open your chest toward the side wall, optionally reaching the top arm straight up.

  5. Lengthen through both the crown and the lifted heel, drawing your low belly in to keep your lower back long rather than swayed.

  6. Gaze at the floor or block for steadiness, hold for 4 to 6 breaths, then lower the lifted leg with control and switch sides.
