Step-by-step instructions

  1. Sit tall on the floor, bring the sole of one foot in toward your groin, and extend the other leg out long along the floor.

  2. Let the bent knee relax open to the side and flex the toes of the straight leg gently toward you, keeping that knee soft rather than locked.

  3. Sit on the edge of a folded blanket if your lower back rounds, so your pelvis can tip slightly forward and your spine stays long.

  4. Inhale to lengthen up through the crown, then exhale and hinge forward from your hips over the straight leg, only as far as your hip and knee stay comfortable.

  5. If you feel pinching in the bent-knee hip, ease out a touch and place a block under that knee for support rather than forcing it down.

  6. Hold for 5 to 8 slow breaths, then rise on an inhale and switch sides.
