Step-by-step instructions

  1. Sit tall on the floor with your spine long, sitting up onto a folded blanket if your lower back rounds.

  2. Bend both knees and bring the soles of your feet together, letting your knees fall open out to the sides.

  3. Clasp your feet or ankles with your hands and gently draw your heels toward your pelvis.

  4. Let the knees release toward the floor only as far as comfortable, never pressing them down, to protect the hips and inner-knee ligaments.

  5. Inhale to lengthen the crown of your head upward, and on an exhale you may hinge slightly forward from the hips, keeping the spine long rather than rounding.

  6. Hold for 6 to 10 calm breaths, then use your hands to lift the knees back together as you release.
