Step-by-step instructions

  1. From a standing position, step one foot far back, keeping the back heel lifted high and balancing on the ball of that foot.

  2. Bend your front knee toward a right angle, stacking it directly over your ankle and tracking it in line with your middle toes to protect the knee.

  3. Level and square your hips toward the front of the mat, gently drawing your low belly in and lengthening your tailbone down to ease pressure off the lower back and front hip.

  4. On an inhale, sweep both arms up alongside your ears, reaching tall through the fingertips while keeping your shoulders relaxed; rest your hands on a block at your hips first if balance feels shaky.

  5. Ground down through the front foot and stay lifted and steady through the core as you breathe smoothly for three to five breaths.

  6. To exit, lower your hands, step your back foot forward to meet the front, and repeat on the second side.
