Step-by-step instructions

  1. Kneel upright with your knees hip-width apart and the tops of your feet flat on the floor, shins pressing down.

  2. Place your hands on your lower back with fingers pointing down, and draw your elbows toward each other to broaden the chest and support the shoulders.

  3. Press your hips forward over your knees and lengthen your tailbone down to protect the lower back, lifting the chest up before leaning back.

  4. Curl back from the upper spine and, if it feels safe, reach your hands to your heels or rest them on a block placed beside each foot.

  5. Keep the back of your neck long by gazing up and slightly back rather than dropping the head, so the neck is not crunched.

  6. Hold for 3 to 5 breaths, then lift the chest to come up leading with the heart, and rest in child's pose to release the back.
