How long should you hold a yoga pose? Yogin paces breath and guidance to the hold
There's no single correct number. A shorter hold settles the shape; a longer hold deepens it. In Yogin, the length you choose changes how much you're guided: a ~30s hold hears a short narration, while a ~60-90s hold earns more beats of guidance, all paced to steady breathing.
What does this is a duration-aware coaching scheduler. Every pose has authored lines for entry, alignment, deepening, and exit. Those lines play as pre-rendered, natural-voice audio clips, not robotic text-to-speech. The scheduler looks at how long you're holding and decides which line is spoken when: the longer the hold, the deeper the guidance.
The point isn't to fill the hold with talk, but to leave room for your breath. In a short hold you hear just enough to align the basics; in a long hold the beats are spaced to match your breathing, with silence left between them. So you're never rushed, each line waits for the next breath, and the guidance never chases you.
The app knows you're in the pose through the camera. Your phone's camera watches you and tracks your body's joints live: shoulders, hips, knees, wrists, ankles, and feet across 26 keypoints. The geometry of those points determines which pose you're in and how well you hold it, expressed as an alignment score. All of this runs on-device; the camera image never leaves the phone and is never uploaded to a server. What's analysed is the skeleton geometry, not the image. Privacy is the architecture, not a setting.
In your personalized plan, holds are already scaled for you. Sessions follow a warm-up → single peak → cool-down arc, and holds are scaled to fill the duration you chose, with difficulty ramping gently across weeks. So you don't have to do the math on how long to hold; the plan sets it to your level and your day, and you just follow your breath and the shape.
Don't fixate on a perfect number. Once you pick the length, Yogin handles the rest: it times the narration to your hold and leaves room for your breath between the lines. Yogin keeps that rhythm for you so you can stay inside it.
Yogin’s platform clients are being rolled out gradually. The homepage links to a live store listing when one is configured; otherwise, it offers platform-specific early access. For more questions about durations, breath, and guidance, see the FAQ page.
